Winter Special: Japan's Earliest Cherry Blossoms at Yaedake Mountain

“What is there to do in Okinawa during winter?” For this question, we confidently recommend Yaedake’s cherry blossoms.

Unlike mainland Japan’s pale Somei-yoshino, these are vibrant “Kanhi-zakura” (Taiwan cherry) in deep pink, painting the entire mountain.

Japan’s Earliest Spring: Yaedake’s “Cherry Blossom Tunnel”

Yaedake Mountain in Motobu Town (453m elevation) is home to approximately 7,000 cherry trees.

Highlights

The 4km drive course from the base to the summit is literally a “cherry blossom tunnel.” While the view from your car is already breathtaking, we recommend stopping at the plazas along the way to walk and take photos.

Cherry Blossom Characteristics

Guide to Avoid the Crowds

The “Cherry Blossom Festival” period (late January to early February) gets extremely crowded. Here’s how to enjoy it comfortably:

1. Arrive Early in the Morning

Traffic jams on the uphill road start after 11 AM. Aim to arrive by 9 AM for smooth parking.

2. Go All the Way to the Summit

Don’t settle for the base — climb to the summit. A spectacular viewpoint awaits where you can see the ocean through the cherry blossoms.

3. Check Out Festival-Only Treats

During the festival, food stalls line the road:

  • Cherry Blossom Ice Cream (adorable pink color!)
  • Fresh Tankan oranges (in season January–March)
  • Local side dishes and mochi

These are winter Yaedake exclusives!
